“AQUA ZEIN NEUTRAL” SOLUTION FORMULA

ENCAPSULATING INGREDIENT, COATING & GRANULATING SOLUTION

ZEIN is used in pharmaceutical manufacturing as a tablet binder or granulating agent, and in all types of tablet coatings, sometimes together with pharmaceutical plasticizers and other ingredients. These include sub-coating or seal coatings, film coatings, enteric and time release coatings for pharmaceutical tablets and seeds. ZEIN has found application in the Food Industry as a coating agent for candy, raisins, peanuts, rice, etc. There have recently been new developments regarding the use of ZEIN as an encapsulating agent for flavors and sweeteners. Some patents have been issued for this particular use.

ZEIN is a protein extracted from corn and declared Generally Recognized As Safe (G.R.A.S.) and broad use applications have been allowed by the Food and Drug Administration without restrictions or limitations. ZEIN coatings, when dried, resist moisture and heat and have some resistance against bacterial and fungal growth.

For many years, the chief way of using ZEIN was as an alcoholic aqueous solution.

Freeman has developed a formula for a neutral non-alcoholic solution of ZEIN for manufacturing utilizing Propylene Glycol.

Freeman’s AQUA ZEIN NEUTRAL solution, when properly applied, will produce a film having virtually no color or taste odor. The solution and resultant film is neutral in pH. The solution using Propylene Glycol will require more time to dry than alcoholic solutions of ZEIN, and a warm air blower will help speed up the drying.
